About Joshua Michaell,M.A., MFT

As a licensed and board-certified marriage and family therapist with a background in yoga philosophy and meditation, Joshua brings compassion, clarity, and deep insight to his counseling practice. He has over two decades of experience in counseling, blending Western psychology with the timeless wisdom traditions of the East.

Joshua works with the treatment of anxiety and depression, mindfulness practices for stress reduction, cultivating work-life balance, helping to create fulfilling relationships, working through trauma, healing through loss and grief, and successfully navigating times of change.

Joshua helped to found the mental health team of One Medical Group in San Francisco, beginning in January 2013, until resuming private practice in May 2017.

COUNSELING WITHIN THE TECH WORLD

In addition to his private practice, Joshua currently works as an onsite mental health provider with Twitter/X -- focusing on team dynamics and resiliency. He previously collaborated with Google in the development of a pilot program for online counseling services.

SANSKRIT, YOGA PHILOSOPHY & MEDITATION

Josh has been involved with regular meditation practice for over three decades. This profoundly informs his worldview and his ability to work with people using a counseling setting as a catalyst for deep, personal transformation.

When his schedule allows, Josh teaches Sanskrit, yoga philosophy, and meditation for yoga workshops and teacher trainings throughout the U.S. and abroad. He has been practicing Ashtanga Yoga since 1993 and studied Sanskrit and yoga philosophy with Vyaas Houston and the late Dr. Ram Karan Sharma. As a former senior teacher for the American Sanskrit Institute, Josh was also on the faculty of the Iyengar Institute of San Francisco, teaching yoga philosophy for the 500-hour Teacher Training curriculum.

Josh's sessions take place virtually - via Zoom, FaceTime, and phone.
Josh's counseling practice is naturally informed by the group work he has led over the years -- including yoga philosophy and Sanskrit workshops. Here are just a few words of appreciation . . .

"Sanskrit cannot be taught without great love, a deep understanding of the transformative beauty of sound, and the vulnerability to approach each moment as new. Joshua Michaell is a rare teacher who has these qualities in abundance." —Vyaas Houston, Founder, American Sanskrit Institute

"A workshop with Joshua is like a cheap ticket to the heart of the Himalayas!" —Jonathan Bricklin, Program Director, New York Open Center
